A Beautiful Common Tailorbird

During the my stay in Hoshiarpur, I wake up many times with the sweet calls of the Common Tailor bird because few of them were visiting the tree behind my room. I have found common Tailorbirds at many locations in Punjab and they are very common. However, due to busy and noisy life, many people fail to enjoy the sweetness of their songs.

The scientific name of this bird is Orthotomus Sutorius and it is a Warbler. The size of this bird is so small sometimes, you find it hard to pinpoint the exact location of it, It is common to find this bird in the Urban gardens or near human population. Common Tailorbird is an Asian bird and it is found in Tropical Asia. These birds are very shy in nature and we can only locate their location through their voice only.

We can easily recognize these birds through their long upright tail. Due to their small size and shy nature, it remains a challenge to take their pictures. In a life full of concrete jungles, it is very hard to find these birds and enjoy their sweet song. This is the disadvantage of today's highly crowded city life that we miss such small things.

Common Tailorbirds feed on small insects like beetles and bugs, thus cleaning the surrounding. We can hear their song or loud calls as cheeup-cheeup-cheeup. We can find them in garden, farmlands, open lands, forests etc. There are many subspecies of this bird are recognized.

The common tailorbird is a very small bird with a size of 10 to 15 cm and it weighs only 7 to 10 grams. These birds, mainly live alone and make pairs during the breeding season. Their breeding season ranges from March to November.

  2. Hello ! My garden had lots and lots of lime yellow, greenish tailorbirds but they have disappeared of late(They were there till 10 December or so, and I could see them early on the morning drinking water and having breakfast ) it's 26 th December today and I haven't seem or heard them) . It is cold here in this part of Madhya Pradesh . Could that be the reason they have left ??.
Please let me know if it is so.

    1. Thanks for the comment. As there were many tailor birds in your garden and now they all have disappeared then it is a matter of selective migration to new location. Don’t worry, they will come back when things are in their favour.
